What to Do if You Lose Your Passport Abroad
Step-by-step guide for losing your passport abroad — police reports, emergency certificates, embassy procedures, realistic timelines.
Losing your passport abroad is stressful but fixable. The Indian embassy system is actually well-set-up for exactly this situation. You need to follow three steps, in order, and you will be on a flight home within 2–4 days in most countries.
Step 1: File a police report
Go to the nearest police station as soon as possible. Get a formal lost/stolen report (sometimes called a *constat de perte* in French-speaking countries, *denuncia* in Spanish). Ask for an official copy with the stamp.
The police report is the single most important document. The embassy cannot process anything without it. Keep multiple photos and a physical copy.
Step 2: Contact the nearest Indian embassy or consulate
Look up your nearest mission on the MEA website. Most embassies have a 24-hour emergency number for passport emergencies.
Two documents are possible, depending on your situation:
- Emergency Certificate (EC): Single-use travel document that lets you fly back to India. Issued in 1–2 working days. Cheap.
- Duplicate Passport: A replacement passport that works like a normal one. Takes longer (7–14 days) and requires more verification.
For most travellers who just want to get home, the EC is the right choice.
Step 3: Documents you need for the embassy
- The police report (original + copies).
- Your photocopy or digital copy of the lost passport (always keep a cloud copy).
- Two passport-size photos (most embassies will direct you to a nearby photo shop).
- Copy of any other Indian ID — Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID — on your phone.
- Flight booking showing intended travel date.
- Filled out EAP-1 form or duplicate passport application (embassy gives you the form).
If you have absolutely nothing — passport photocopy lost, other IDs not accessible — the embassy can still verify you through a video call with a family member in India. It slows things down by 1–2 days.
Step 4: Travel back
An EC is usually only valid for a direct flight back to India. If your original route had stopovers in a third country, you may need to re-route. Some EC holders are denied boarding or transit by airlines unfamiliar with the document — email the airline in advance with the EC details.
Step 5: Back in India
You must apply for a new regular passport within 30 days of returning. The application is slightly faster than a first-time passport because your records exist. Fee is normal (Rs 1,500–2,000).
Money while you wait
If your wallet was also stolen, the embassy can arrange for a wire transfer from a family member in India — a service called *repatriation assistance*. Funds typically arrive within 24 hours.

What if my passport is stolen along with my phone?
Use the embassy's assistance desk to contact family in India. They can verify your identity, fund the EC fee, and help you rebuild access to flights and bookings.
Can I get a new passport in a third country?
Yes, if you are not in an emergency. Duplicate passports can be issued at any Indian mission with proper documentation.
Does travel insurance cover lost passports?
Most policies cover the replacement fee and sometimes the cost of a delayed flight. Not the cost of the trip itself.
Will this affect future visas?
A clean lost-passport record (with police report and embassy replacement) is fine. Repeated losses in a short timespan may get scrutiny.
